Umugoroba wo Kwibuka-Night Vigil

Every year, during the month of April, as the world observes a solemn period of remembrance for the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Ballet Icyeza took the initiative and partnered with Rwandan Community Abroad in Poland to organize a Night of Remembrance—“Umugoroba wo Kwibuka”— under the theme “From History to Memory: Examining Rwanda’s journey, Confronting Genocide Denial and Empowering Youth to Safeguard the Truth.” This event was put in place to emphasize the role of the youth in preserving and honoring the memory of our loved ones we lost and to promote unity.

The Night Vigil brought together Rwandan communities, friends of Rwanda and representatives from neighboring countries to reflect on Rwanda’s historical journey, recognize the dangers of genocide denial and silence in the face of injustice while also emphasizing on the responsibility of the youth in standing against denial and divisionism and build a peaceful and inclusive society. Through this initiative, Ballet Icyeza reaffirmed the commitment to memory preservation, the power of youth and culture in promoting truth and unity within the Rwandan Diaspora.
